The Japanese Tax System

The Japanese Tax System
By:"Hiromitsu Ishi"
Published on 2001-03-01 by OUP Oxford

Japan's tax system, which has changed notably through periods of war, post-war reconstruction, rapid economic development, and moderated economic growth, provides outstandingly rich material for in-depth study. In this comprehensive and incisive work, Professor Ishi makes available to English-speaking readers both a detailed description and a perceptive critique of that system. Part I introduces the system in historical and contemporary context and sets out its main features. Part II is devoted to individual income tax - the most important of Japan's taxes - and Part III covers corporate and capital taxation. In Part IV, Professor Ishi provides a detailed analysis of the structure of the indirect tax system in Japan, which proved crucial to tax reform movements in the late 1980s, while Part V discusses the significance of recent tax innovations. This fully revised third edition explores the Japanese government's latest round of tax reforms - a reaction to the country's prolonged period of recession following the collapse of the 'bubble' phenomenon in 1991. Two brand new chapters discuss the effect of environmental taxes and land tax reform, and much of the original data and empirical material has been updated. Professor Ishi's unrivalled experience, including his service on the Tax Advisory Commission (most recently as its Chairman), his activities in scholarly international public finance organizations, and his work in teaching and research, notably in the United States, Italy, and Australia, have enabled him to produce an authoritative and stimulating view of Japan's tax system. His book will be invaluable to all scholars of the theory and practice of taxation.

The Income Tax

The Income Tax
By:"Edwin Robert Anderson Seligman"
Published on 1914 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd.

Originally published: New York: The Macmillan Company, 1914. xi, 743 pp. Reprint of the second edition, which includes a new chapter on the income tax of 1913. Seligman argues persuasively that graduated income taxes distribute the burden of taxation with greater justice than other systems. After he sets out the fundamental problem of the concept of income taxation, Seligman enhances his theoretical argument with a historical examination of income taxes in Europe and the United States. With a useful index and a thorough bibliography. Edwin R.A. Seligman [1861-1939] was an eminent economist and authority on tax issues. He was admitted to the New York State bar in 1884 and in the same year received an appointment as lecturer in the political science department at Columbia University, where he later became a professor of political economy and finance. Seligman was a cofounder of the American Economic Association, serving as Its president from 1902-1904, and was later president of the National Tax Association (1913-1915). He served as an adviser to New York State and New York City tax commissions and acted as consultant to the League of Nations (1922-1923) and the government of Cuba in 1931. He was the editor in chief of the Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences and editor of the Columbia University series Studies in History, Economics and Public Law. He was the author of numerous titles on taxation and economics including The Shifting and Incidence of Taxation (1892; 3rd ed., 1910), Progressive Taxation in Theory and Practice (1894; 2nd ed. 1908), Economic Interpretation of History (1902; 2nd ed. 1907), Principles of Economics (1907), Studies in Public Finance (1925) and Essays in Economics (1925). \

The Money Book for Freelancers, Part-Timers, and the Self-Employed
By:"Joseph D'Agnese","Denise Kiernan"
Published on 2010-03-02 by Crown Business

This is a book for people like us, and we all know who we are. We make our own hours, keep our own profits, chart our own way. We have things like gigs, contracts, clients, and assignments. All of us are working toward our dreams: doing our own work, on our own time, on our own terms. We have no real boss, no corporate nameplate, no cubicle of our very own. Unfortunately, we also have no 401(k)s and no one matching them, no benefits package, and no one collecting our taxes until April 15th. It’s time to take stock of where you are and where you want to be. Ask yourself: Who is planning for your retirement? Who covers your expenses when clients flake out and checks are late? Who is setting money aside for your taxes? Who is responsible for your health insurance? Take a good look in the mirror: You are. The Money Book for Freelancers, Part-Timers, and the Self-Employed describes a completely new, comprehensive system for earning, spending, saving, and surviving as an independent worker. From interviews with financial experts to anecdotes from real-life freelancers, plus handy charts and graphs to help you visualize key concepts, you’ll learn about topics including: • Managing Cash Flow When the Cash Isn’t Flowing Your Way • Getting Real About What You’re Really Earning • Tools for Getting Out of Debt and Into Financial Security • Saving Consistently When You Earn Irregularly • What To Do When a Client’s Check Doesn’t Come In • Health Savings Accounts and How To Use Them • Planning for Retirement, Taxes and Dreams—All On Your Own From the Trade Paperback edition.

By:"Anthony G. Hopwood","Jeffrey Unerman","Jessica Fries"
Published on 2010 by Earthscan

If businesses and other organizations are to meet the many and complex challenges of sustainable development, then they all, both public and private, need to embed sustainability considerations into their decision-making and reporting. However, the translation of this aspiration into effective action is often inhibited by the lack of systems and procedures that take sustainability into account.Accounting for Sustainability: Practical Insights will help organizations to address these issues. The book sets out a number of tools and approaches that have been developed and applied by leading organizations to:- embed sustainability into decision-making, extending beyond an organization's boundaries to take into account suppliers, customers and other stakeholders;- measure and link sustainability and financial performance; - integrate sustainability into 'mainstream' reporting, both to management and external stakeholders. In-depth cases studies from Aviva, BT, the Environment Agency, EDF Energy, HSBC, Novo Nordisk, Sainsbury's and West Sussex County Council show in detail how accounting for sustainability works in practice in a wide range of organizational contexts. By:"Jayne M. Godfrey","Keryn Chalmers"
Published on 2012 by Edward Elgar Publishing

This groundbreaking book examines the role that water accounting can play in resolving economic, environmental and social issues. One of the most pressing global issues of the 21st century is the scarcity of water to ensure economic, environmental and social sustainability. In addressing the issue through policy and management, access to high quality information is critically important. But water scarcity has many implications, and it is possible that different reporting approaches, generally called water accounting systems, can be appropriate to addressing them. In this key book, international experts respond to the question: what role can water accounting play in resolving economic, social and environmental issues at individual, organizational, industry, national and international levels? They explore how various forms of water accounting are utilized and the issues that they address. Academics and postgraduate students interested in water scarcity and accounting will find this book invaluable.
