Behavioural Finance

Behavioural Finance
By:"William Forbes"
Published on 2009-10-19 by John Wiley & Sons

The study of Behavioural finance is relatively new and examines how individuals’ attitudes and behaviour affect their financial decisions and financial markets. ‘Behavioural Finance’ builds on existing knowledge and skills that students have already gained on an introductory finance or corporate finance course. The primary focus of the book is on how behavioural approaches extend what students already know. At each stage the theory is developed by application to the FTSE 100 companies and their valuation and strategy. This approach helps the reader understand how behavioural models can be applied to everyday problems faced by practitioners at both a market and individual company level. The book develops simple formal expositions of existing attempts to model the impact of behavioural bias on investor/managers’ decisions. Where possible this is done grounding the discussion in practical, numerical, examples from the financial press and business life.

Globalisation and Contextual Factors in Accounting: The Case of Germany

Globalisation and Contextual Factors in Accounting: The Case of Germany
By:"Eva Heidhues","Christopher Patel"
Published on 2012-03-01 by Emerald Group Publishing

This research monograph critically examines convergence of financial reporting in Germany by taking into account the influence of political, social and economic factors on accounting. This study makes an original and significant contribution by examining issues and biases in the convergence process that may challenge the assumption of superiority, global comparability and universal applicability of International Financial Reporting Standards. Specifically, this monograph critically evaluates convergence by taking into account German accounting development and examines issues concerning the application of professional judgment, which has increasingly been recognized as an important and controversial topic in international accounting. By applying a holistic approach with an emphasis on multiple perspectives, this study shows that accounting research will be enhanced by a critical examination of contextual environments of countries rather than a focus on measurement, quantification, simplification and categorisation.

Numerical Methods in Finance

Numerical Methods in Finance
By:"Paolo Brandimarte"
Published on 2003-10-13 by John Wiley & Sons

Balanced coverage of the methodology and theory of numerical methods in finance Numerical Methods in Finance bridges the gap between financial theory and computational practice while helping students and practitioners exploit MATLAB for financial applications. Paolo Brandimarte covers the basics of finance and numerical analysis and provides background material that suits the needs of students from both financial engineering and economics perspectives. Classical numerical analysis methods; optimization, including less familiar topics such as stochastic and integer programming; simulation, including low discrepancy sequences; and partial differential equations are covered in detail. Extensive illustrative examples of the application of all of these methodologies are also provided. The text is primarily focused on MATLAB-based application, but also includes descriptions of other readily available toolboxes that are relevant to finance. Helpful appendices on the basics of MATLAB and probability theory round out this balanced coverage. Accessible for students-yet still a useful reference for practitioners-Numerical Methods in Finance offers an expert introduction to powerful tools in finance.
